Understanding the Causes and Treatments for One-Sided Nasal Blockage

Having one side of your nose constantly blocked can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Many people assume it’s just a common cold, but a one-sided nasal blockage can actually indicate several underlying issues. Identifying the cause is important so the right treatment can be given.

1. Common Causes of One-Sided Nasal Blockage

Here are some of the most common reasons we encounter in ENT practice

a. Deviated Nasal Septum
The septum is the wall that divides the right and left nasal passages. When it is crooked or deviated, air flows unevenly through the nostrils, often causing persistent blockage on one side.

b. Nasal Polyps
Polyps are soft tissue growths that can develop inside the nasal cavity due to chronic inflammation. As they enlarge, they can obstruct airflow and cause nasal congestion.

c. Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic reactions to dust, mites, or cold air may cause swelling of the nasal lining, which can block one nostril more than the other.

d. Sinus Infection (Sinusitis)
Inflamed sinuses can cause one-sided congestion, often accompanied by facial pressure, headache, or nasal discharge.

e. Turbinate Hypertrophy
Turbinates are small structures inside the nose that warm and filter the air you breathe. When they become enlarged due to allergies or infection, one side of the nose may feel blocked.

2. When Should You See an ENT Specialist?

You should visit an ENT doctor if:

  • The blockage occurs only on one side and lasts more than 2 weeks
  • You experience recurrent nosebleeds
  • Your sense of smell decreases
  • The blockage is accompanied by headache or facial pain

An endoscopic nasal examination allows the doctor to directly visualize the nasal cavity and determine the exact cause of the blockage.

3. Treatment Options

Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include:

  • Nasal spray medications to reduce inflammation or allergy response

  • Allergy therapy for long-term control

  • Endoscopic nasal procedures if a deviated septum or nasal polyp needs correction

  • Home care tips: keep indoor air humid, rinse the nose with saline solution, and avoid dust or smoke exposure

One-sided nasal blockage is not always a minor issue. Early examination and treatment can prevent chronic sinus problems or long-term breathing difficulties.
